In Social Studies, we have been learning about communities changing over time. We have a made-up community in our classroom, and since it was Valentine's Day, we named it Valentown! Our community started as one small neighborhood on a big sheet of paper. Then, a valentine factory opened, and lots of people started moving there to work in it. Then, we realized they would need places to shop and police to keep them safe, and restaurants and other buildings. We added lots of new places that would make even more people want to live in Valentown. But then... the valentine factory closed! People started moving away because they didn't have a job anymore. Then, the stores started closing because they didn't have any customers. Then more people moved away, and eventually the neighborhoods got really run-down and empty. We decided we make people want to move back to Valentown by making it nicer again. So, we had to decide if we would fix the old buildings up or tear them down. We could either leave it empty or build something new. After we fixed them up, we decided that people would want to live there again!
Hi! My name's Kyra. I love friends, and I love dogs and cats and all sorts of animals. I like how dogs sometimes act, like when they put their paw on you or just want to play. But I've barely experienced that because my dog does not like other dogs or anything else like turles - because she gets scared of turtles!!! One time my sister Megan had a turlte to bring home from school. We showed it to Misu, and the turle put its head in its shell. Misu just backed up and ran away! And with friends, I love how they keep you company and tell you funny jokes! I love friends and families too, because when you go to parties you get to see them. Sometimes they are far away for some people, but not for me! One time, my cousins were having their fifth birthday, and they were twins. But, there was a problem! The twins got sick. And then their mom got sick. And then their big brother got sick. And their dad! But their dog didn't get sick. And the dog kept the twins company. And that's all about friends and family and dogs!
Guess what? We're back! And this time we're blogging about science! We have a new unit, and it's about air. We finished our insect unit two weeks ago (so we are experts about insects), but we are just starting to learn about air. Last week we got to observe air under water. We had a vial with a paper towel stuck in the bottom. We had a big challenge - we had to try to keep the towel dry, even though we put the whole vial underwater!! When we put it in upside-down, the air couldn't get out anywhere, so it pushed the water down and kept the paper towel dry. And that's how we learned that air takes up space.
Hi, I am Riley. I like sports, building Legos, gymnastics, reading and playing Wii!! But my favorite thing to do is watch football games with my Dad, especially Michigan State. When I grow up I want to go to MSU for college! Go green! Go white! Fight fight fight!
Hi! It's us again! We are having a competition in art. Would you like to hear about it? It all started when we were in art class today. Miss Wettlaufer told us that we will be in a competition with all the second graders in Troy - even in other schools! We are drawing close-ups of flowers, because they are going to be hung in the Troy Garden Club. The Garden Club will be the judges, and if you win, you won't get your drawing back for a long time. That's because the winners will be hung up along the garden walk for all of spring! Wish us luck!
