Do you know Flat Stanley? He's a character from a book. Do you know why he's called Flat Stanley? Because he got flattened by a bulletin board that fell on him while he was sleeping! He came to visit us last week. He came all the way from Virginia! Grace's cousin Ella sent him. She is in second grade, too! Her whole class got to make a paper Stanley and send him somewhere. We were supposed to send him back with a few souvenirs, so we made a book for him. It was called The ABCs of Room 3. We made it Stanley-sized, of course. We made a video for you to see our book, too! (Hint: Look down!) If you enjoy the video, you could leave us a comment! Thanks, Virginia Welcome to the Entomologist's Corner! We are not just super second graders anymore... now, we are also excited entomologists! Do you know what entomologists do? If not, we'll tell you. Entomologists study insects, and that's what we're doing in science now! Well, not right this minute. We're writing a blog right now! Anyway, back to the bugs. We met real live mealworms on Friday, and we got to look at them up close with a magnifying glass. Some of us thought it was gross, but it was still AWESOME! We don't know a lot about the meal-worms yet, but we are going to keep them in our classroom and keep learning more about them. We'll let you know what we find out!
Hello everyone! It's Elise! I'm going to tell you about some things I like. I loooove writing chapter books, especially really long ones. I'm working on a chapter book called "A Night of Knights." It's about one evening when Sean and Julia discover knights in their fort. Creepy, right? Okay, so I'm going to tell you more about me. I have a sister, mom, dad, of course me, and my dog Lola in my family. Oh, I almost forgot something! My two fish! My fish is named Little Dude, and my sister's fish is named Goldie. One day, I woke up and Little Dude was doing a back flip! I was like, "Whoooooaa! Mom, you gotta come see this!" She ran downstairs and said "What happened?" all out of breath. And I said, "My fish is doing a back flip!" She was like "Really?!" (All mad at me!) I love playing outside with my dog. Once my sister made it jump two inches high! Sometimes my dad and I have tickle tortures before bed. Bye!
Hi! My name is Henry. I play hockey. The best thing about playing hockey is that if you accidentally bump someone, it isn't a penalty like in another sport. I also play baseball. But in baseball, if you accidentally bump someone, they would be safe even if you got them out. In school we did our final toy design today. It was for science. And in math, we each took turns being Puzzled Penguin. But the best thing was the Blackout Party! The Blackout Party is where we all dress up in black and we bring flashlights and we read in the dark. I liked them all, though. I can't wait to do the Blackout Party again! It's raining cats and dogs? What? I gotta go see this! Hey... you tricked me! We're just kidding! "Raining cats and dogs" is just an idiom. It really means it's raining hard. We learned about idioms from Amelia Bedelia. Do you know her? If not, we'll tell you about her. She's a character in a book we are reading as a class, and she doesn't understand idioms. One time, someone told her to bring a piece of cherry pie and "step on it"! That really means go fast, but Amelia Bedelia actually stepped on the pie! SPLAT!
Today we learned more idioms with our fourth grade buddies. Our buddies taught us a new idiom, and we got to draw what we thought it would mean. Then our buddy told us if we were right, and we drew what it really means. It was super fun! We hope we do something like it again some time soon. Hi! My name is Abhinav, and I like to write stories! I like to write down stories about times when I was scared or happy. I like to write them down, because sometimes after the scary part comes the exciting or funny part! And in my happy stories, I get to tell about something that I never did before. I also like drawing pictures, because then I can draw a really good picture when I'm sending an encouraging letter to my friend! Like, I can send one to my friend who has a little baby who runs to me whenever I come over. I have a really good teacher, and I gave her a picture. And I like all the read alouds she gives. We're going to have one now, that's why I chose to write that. Well, that's it! Bye! I might be a blogger again and blog about myself a second time!
In our class, we love science! We love it because we get to make cool stuff. But yesterday, we made the COOLEST thing ever! We made a roller coaster. But it wasn't a roller coaster for us, it was for a marble! So don't get confused. We made the track out of styrofoam runways. We had to tape them together to make the roller coaster go all the way across the classroom. We made loop-de-loops and hills all along it. We had to tape it to the SMARTboard projector to make it high enough to make it around the whole track. We learned that if it starts high, then the marble will get enough force from gravity to make it. Then we tried it. Zoom! A marble came zipping by! We had to try a few times, and it didn't work. Each time, we had to figure out what went wrong and fix it. But at the end, it was AWESOME!
